When I was a child, an unhoused man approached me during a school field trip into the city. He startled me in asking for something to eat. Without hesitation, I gave him my entire lunch for the day. As he walked off, I had never imagined a grown man asking a child for something so simple as a meal. From that day forward I always had a place in my heart for the less fortunate.
I’ve been all over the world and seen the plight of what displacement can bring. Though America is not as bad as other less fortunate countries, I’ve always felt the title of “the Greatest country on Earth” is not realized if we’ve left our neighbour behind.
Though not always, I’ve tried to live my life by setting the standard. I value people. When I care, I care. And I care about the unhoused community. This isn’t something that can’t be done, it’s something we start doing. Day by day, person to person.
